Is this basic life support training course suitable for me?

This regulated and nationally recognised basic life support training (BLS) and management of anaphylaxis course allows students to hone their skills and knowledge in BLS and AED use as well as anaphylaxis treatment. This first aid course is intended for individuals who have a specific responsibility at work, at home, or in volunteer and community activities to render basic life support and manage anaphylaxis in the event of an emergency.

This course can be adapted to both adults and paediatrics.

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rapidly after exposure to an allergen. It can affect people of all ages, including adults and children. The most common triggers of anaphylaxis include foods, medications, insect stings, and latex.

During anaphylaxis, the immune system overreacts to the allergen, releasing chemicals such as histamine that cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, hives or rash, low blood pressure, and shock. These symptoms can quickly progress and may lead to loss of consciousness and cardiac arrest, which can be fatal.

It is essential for everyone to know how to administer first aid to someone suffering from anaphylaxis because it is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. The administration of epinephrine, a medication that helps to open up airways and increase blood pressure, is the primary treatment for anaphylaxis. Delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to severe complications or even death.

Knowing how to recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and how to administer first aid and basic life support can help to save lives and prevent serious complications. Anyone with a history of severe allergic reactions or who is at risk of anaphylaxis should carry an epinephrine auto-injector and know how to use it.

How long is the course?

The course lasts 4 hours. We can deliver the course on site at your workplace or an offsite training venue.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed by continuous observation. Successful candidates will receive a qualsafe certificate, valid for one year.

The The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states, “The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and to the self-employed.”
The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that every workplace carry a first aid kit. This is not the law. However, it is a legal responsibility to offer 'prompt attention' to injured personnel. It is thus strongly advised to follow this guidance in order to avoid breaching the law.
