Who is the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) for?

The Level 3 AET (formerly PTLLS) is the starting point for anyone who wants to teach or train adults. It’s a recognised qualification for people working, or planning to work, in the further education and skills sector.

This course is ideal if you:

  • Want to deliver training at work or in your specialist field

  • Plan to teach in further education, adult learning, or community education

  • Are already an assessor and want a teaching qualification to support your role

  • Are new to training and want to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver sessions effectively

Entry Requirements

To enrol you must:

  • Be at least 19 years old on the first day of the course

  • Have a good standard of written and spoken English (Level 2 or equivalent is advised)

  • Be willing to plan and deliver a short teaching session (known as a microteach) to your peers

Tip: It helps to have experience or qualifications in the subject you want to teach, but it isn’t essential.

How the Level 3 AET is Structured?

The AET is your first step into teaching and training. It opens the door to a wide range of opportunities in the further education and skills sector.

After completing the AET you could

  • Deliver in-house training within your workplace

  • Teach short courses for private training providers or community learning centres

  • Work towards roles in further education and adult education

  • Combine your teaching skills with assessing, quality assurance, or subject-specialist training

Progression Routes

Many learners use the AET as a foundation and then move on to higher-level qualifications:

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (RQF)

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (RQF)

  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)

  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET)

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)

These qualifications can help you progress into roles such as:

  • Workplace trainer

  • Assessor

  • Tutor in adult or community education

  • Internal Quality Assurer (with further study)

How You’ll Be Assessed

You’ll complete both theory and practical elements to achieve your AET:

  • Workbooks – 3 written workbooks where you’ll apply the knowledge from the course.

  • Microteach – you’ll plan and deliver a 15-minute teaching session to your peers. You’ll also observe others and give feedback, which counts towards your assessment.

All assessments are graded Pass or Fail. If you don’t pass first time, you’ll receive feedback and can resubmit.

Course Hours:

  • Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 48 hours (teaching, tutor contact, and assessment)

  • Total Qualification Time (TQT): 120 hours (including self-study, preparation, and assignments)

  • Completion time: You have up to 12 months to finish the qualification.

Where Can the Level 3 AET Take You?

The qualification is made up of two mandatory units and one optional unit. Everyone completes the same core units, then chooses an assessment-focused unit.

Mandatory Units

Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

Optional Units (choose one)

Understanding assessment in education and training

Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

Together, these units give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to plan, deliver, and evaluate training sessions for adults.

  • Complete your microteach online: deliver a short teaching session to your peers via webcam

  • All assessments (workbooks + microteach) are supported and submitted online

The Support You’ll Receive

  • Tutor feedback on every assignment so you know exactly how to improve
